Pepper Elder

Pepper Elder and many other herbs have been replaced by modern medicine but it still continues to have its purpose in the world of herbal medicine. Today, Pepper Elder is primarily grown as a beautiful addition to many gardens due to its ornamental leaves. The plant still has a number of uses and health benefits that can be had by eating the herb cooked or raw.

The entire plant is edible and is used to combat ailments such as flatulence, fatigue and abdominal pain. The juices from the Pepper Elder can also be extracted by boiling it and allowing it to steep. This juice can either be used to create herbal tea or a tonic that is said to be beneficial to the blood. Pepper Elder does also have culinary uses as its spicy fruit can be used as a substitute for commercial pepper and is an addition to a few local dishes.

To make a Pepper Elder herbal infusion or tea use one to two teaspoonfuls of dried herb to a cupful of water.  Use to make a tea in a an infuser teapot or for a stronger infusion place the herb in a saucepan, pour on the water, cover with a lid and simmer gently for approximately ten minutes before straining.
